Heather Thomas ~Mediator
About
Originally hailing from England and currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah, I bring over two decades of experience supporting individuals and communities through complex interpersonal and organizational challenges. I offer a steady and thoughtful presence in moments of tension, transition, or conflict.
I’m a court-rostered mediator in the state of Utah, certified through the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law. I also received specialized training in victim-offender and restorative practices through the University of Minnesota–Duluth. In addition to community-based, organizational, and workplace mediation, I also work within the court system—navigating complex dynamics involving attorneys, families, and legal structures. I hold a BA and a graduate-level certificate in Theology, which help me engage thoughtfully across a wide range of cultural and faith-based contexts.
A year spent in Sudan during a time marked by civil conflict, along with 15 years providing respite care for children in foster care—including those navigating conflict within systems, families, and unfamiliar communities—shaped my desire to support people in moments of tension and transition. These experiences continue to inform my trauma-aware, structured, compassionate, and assertive approach to conflict resolution.
I’ve also spent many years in community leadership roles. This work deepened my understanding of how trust is built, how power is held, and how meaningful change happens in both organizational and interpersonal settings.
My mediation work focuses on organizational and interpersonal disputes, including team and staff dynamics, leadership conflict, family-related issues, and broader community challenges. Whether supporting nonprofit boards, faith communities, individuals within these settings, or collaborative partnerships—from local grassroots teams to regional organizations—I work to create a process where people feel heard, respected, and equipped to make thoughtful decisions. I approach each mediation with a commitment to neutrality, confidentiality, and respect for every voice in the room.
I’m continually inspired by the insight and resilience people bring to the table, even in times of uncertainty. If you're facing a challenging dynamic or preparing for an important conversation, I’d be honored to support the process.

How I Work
I see conflict not as a barrier, but as an opportunity for growth and deeper understanding. With a calm and grounded presence, I help individuals and groups navigate disagreement with clarity and care. My approach blends courage, diplomacy, and emotional intelligence—supporting direct conversations, even in the midst of tension or uncertainty.
Rather than avoiding conflict, I help people face it constructively. I listen actively, honor diverse perspectives, and guide conversations toward solutions grounded in fairness and mutual respect. I strive to uphold the integrity of the process while empowering participants to move forward with confidence.
Each situation is unique, but my goal remains the same: to foster open dialogue and help communities, organizations, and individuals find a clear and workable path forward.
The most rewarding part of mediation is supporting people in finding a path forward.
